Quiz & LMS Glossary

Plain-English definitions of the quiz and LMS terms students actually run into — from Canvas New Quizzes to lockdown browsers.

LMS (Learning Management System): The web platform a school uses to host courses, assignments, and quizzes. Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace (D2L), Google Classroom, and Schoology are all LMS platforms. Almost every online quiz you take lives inside one. Canvas Quiz Solver →
Canvas New Quizzes: Canvas's newer quiz engine (built on Quizzes.Next), replacing Classic Quizzes. It uses a different underlying HTML structure and adds question types like categorization and hot-spot. Classic and New Quizzes can both exist in the same course. Classic vs New Quizzes →
Classic Quizzes: Canvas's original quiz tool. It's still widely used and uses different page markup from New Quizzes. Instructors choose which engine to build a quiz in, and the two behave differently for timing, question banks, and question types.
LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability): A standard that lets third-party tools (publisher content, proctoring services, external quiz tools) plug into an LMS and pass grades back. When a quiz opens a McGraw-Hill or Pearson tool inside Canvas, that's usually an LTI integration.
Proctoring: Software that monitors a student during an online exam — via webcam, screen recording, or browser lockdown — to deter and detect cheating. Proctorio and Honorlock are common examples. Proctored exams heavily restrict what runs on your computer. Can professors see extensions? →
Lockdown browser: A locked-down testing app (such as Respondus LockDown Browser) that replaces your normal browser during an exam. It disables tab switching, copy-paste, screenshots, and — importantly — all browser extensions, so no extension can run inside it.
Respondus LockDown Browser: The most common lockdown browser, often paired with Respondus Monitor (webcam recording). While it's active, Chrome extensions are completely disabled. QuizSolve, like any extension, cannot run inside a LockDown Browser session. Respondus, explained →
MCQ (Multiple Choice Question): A question with several answer options where you pick one (or, in multiple-select, several). MCQs are the most common quiz format across every LMS, which is why most quiz tools handle them first.
Multiple-select: A 'select all that apply' question where more than one option can be correct. It's scored more strictly than a single-answer MCQ because you have to get every correct option — and no incorrect ones.

Question pool / question bank: A set of questions the LMS randomly draws from, so different students (or attempts) get different questions. Pools make static 'answer keys' useless, since your specific question is chosen at runtime.
Multimodal AI: An AI model that understands images as well as text. It's what lets a quiz solver answer image-based questions — diagrams, graphs, chemical structures, or a photographed problem — by reading the picture and the question together.
